Rough Cut 1 Feedback

Trailer
We showed our rough cut to the demographic audience for our soap and received feedback from them to see what their impressions were of our trailer, poster and magazine. This is to gain feedback and make any changes that we hadn't thought of before. So far our trailer is only a rough cut and we are aware of that fact that there is still a lot missing but it was still helpful to receive both positive comments but also things they think we could improve on.

Some of the positive comments we received helped gain confidence in our trailer as we are aware of the parts that people thought worked well which would help when it comes to making our second rough cut. Some of the positive comments include a good setting. Most groups commented on how they liked where the trailer was set and how it’s different to other trailers. Another was the characters and costumes as the mise en scene was well thought out. Some groups commented on how the costumes the actors wore corresponded well with their character and the personality that we wanted to show. It revealed a lot about them as characters by the use of colour and connotations. Other positive comments include ones like good use of various shots, unique ideas and good use of lighting.

The demographic audience also gave us a few things they believe we could improve on after watching the first rough cut. What people mostly commented on was how continuity was not always accurate. However, we put that down to the trailer not yet being finished as we understand it does not yet fully make sense as not all scenes have been put in yet. The feedback for this did prove helpful as there were certain shots that they found discontinuous that we had not before noticed. Other improvements were ones such as no titles, voice overs or music which are all things we intend to include as we continue on improving our trailer.

Magazine
With our magazine rough cut most demographic groups commented on the use of images and how they thought the main image created the right impression for our new soap. They also liked the bold bright colours we used which follow the generic conventions of a magazine cover as it catches your eye and attracts you to it. For our own magazine cover we had to create a non-existing logo that we designed ourselves. Our magazine is called 'Soap World' so for the logo we had an image of Earth with the lettering wrapped around it. Some groups commented on how they liked the logo and thought it was an appropriate name and logo for a soap magazine.

Some of the improvements the other groups made were on minor things that we knew we had to improve on. The commented on how there were quite a few gaps that needed to be filled. To improve this we understand we need to include more images to fill every gap on the cover. One comment suggested something we had not previously picked up on which was a spelling mistake. This comment made us more aware of our accuracy with grammar on our magazine cover so when it came to our final cut everything including spelling was correct. Something that is considered on most magazine covers is the left third which shows the most important parts like the price, barcode and logo. In our first rough cut we had not yet properly considered this and some groups picked up on this. For our second magazine rough cut we will make sure that every aspect is considered.

Poster
For our poster we have an image of the character at the photo shoot to show their personalities and how they may come across in the soap. The other groups positively commented on our use of costume and how it was considered well. Our decisions when it came to clothing were well thought out as we wanted to make certain characters stand out more than others. This came across well as the groups commented on how they knew which character were the ones that were going to cause trouble because the colour of some of their costumes showed connotations of danger. They also liked the framing of the photo and how its effective that they are all stood together as a group but all show different storylines just by their body language and positioning.

Some things that could be improved were things like the font and colour. They did not feel it had enough colour or personality in the style of font and the positioning of the information. Some also felt there was a lack of information about the soap and when it begins. When it comes to creating our second rough cut things like changing the font are simple improvements that we know we can change to update the quality of our poster. We are confident that once these improvements are made for the trailer, magazine and poster that the quality would have largely improved and that because of the feedback we received, we will be able to make the correct improvements to overall enhance the quality of them all.
