Soap Opera Trailers Target Audiences

From the research we carried out, the trailers were shown in the evening before the water shed, which is before 9pm.
The people who would watch these trailers would be from the demographic groups B through to E. This includes people from working class right through to students and the unemployed.

We know this as these are the type of people who would watch the actual soap opera. The trailers would be targeted at original audience members and also to people who haven't watched the soaps, to try and gain a bigger viewing audience. The trailers are shown either side of the soap which the trailer is promoting, and also in the middle of other programs that are on the same channel. The timing and programmes which the trailers are shown in, can effect their target audience.
The trailers need to be show at prime time in order to be advertised to the biggest audience possible. For example if the trailers were shown at mid-day they would not attract the biggest audience because not many people watch TV at this time compared to prime time.

Comparision Of Soap Operas

Comparison of Soap Opera episodes
From looking at a range of Soap Operas we have been able to compare similarities between them.  We have been able to detect themes and conventions that link through all of the soaps. This has allowed us to see what we would need to include in our soap opera trailers to create them into believable soaps.
Eastenders + Hollyoaks + Coronation St. + Emmerdale = Pub
Eastenders + Hollyoaks + Coronation St. = Affairs
Hollyoaks + Eastenders = Homosexual relationships
Eastenders + Hollyoaks + Coronation St. + Emmerdale = Corner Shops
Eastenders + Hollyoaks + Coronation St. = Affair Victims
Hollyoaks + Coronation St. = Bad boy character
Eastenders + Hollyoaks+ Coronation St. + Emmerdale = Household settings
Eastenders + Coronation St. + Hollyoaks + Emmerdale = Arguments/Feuds
Eastenders + Coronation St. + Hollyoaks + Emmerdale = Families

Paige watched eastenders and noticed the storyline of affairs came up, she thought this was a good convention to use for our soap opera, so we have decided to encorporate this convention in our soap opera trailer. Millie watched emmerdale and alot of rural settings came into play, we have decided to ignore this convention as we want our soap opera to be glamorous and corner shops and pubs are not places high class people go too. Yas watched hollyoaks and a homosexual storyline cropped up, we like this as we want to use various characters in our soap so we can have many different storylines. We are going to make a note of this idea and have a discussion to see where we can fit in homosxexuals. Cath watched coronation street and saw that there was a bad boy character in it, we have decided to use a bad boy in our soap opera but are going to do it discreetly by making it so only the audience know he's a bad boy and not the other characters.
